Overview & Introduction To Genealogy Information
Genealogy information is all about gathering knowledge and tracing your family history and discovering your roots. No doubt it’s true that you stand on your own two feet, but it’s nevertheless exciting to discover that your direct lineage can be traced to folks who risked their lives to come to America on the Mayflower. Or maybe you can trace back to royalty in the Middle Ages or some valiant hero from a bygone time that fought for the honor of some great cause. You can be amazed to see just how this type of information can affect how you feel about yourself and your heritage.
Unfortunately, few people really know how to go about researching their family history. A fine place to start is the internet which, with its abundance of genealogy information could be good or bad depending on how you see it. The key to the internet is simply knowing how to separate the wheat from the chaff and efficiently dig up useful information. Today, there are a number of websites that are precisely established to facilitate this type of research. For example, there is Ancestry.com, Rootsweb, or even MyHeritage.com.
From these types of sites, you can generally dig up things like marriage licenses, death certificates, birth certificates, military records, census reports, probated wills, or tax records. The biggest problem is not getting genealogy information, but rather getting the information that actually is relevant and applies to you. There is an absolute glut of redundancy, and you’ll be amazed at how many people have the exact same name! When you consider that you’ll be looking into the lives of dozens of people, these possibilities for confusion only multiply.
The key is to simply begin where you can get the first solid information, and then fill the gaps. The more information you gain, the easier it is to get more. The one thing that these sites do is that they conveniently bring the information to you. There will be access to records you could have never really had a chance to access. Most people cannot afford the time or money it would take to travel.
Of course, some people may not need to travel. If you come from a family that has remained centrally located in an area for a long time, then your best source of genealogy information may just be the local courthouse. Using the local court records, or even the state department records, you can now access the same types of records, but without the “noise” of people all over the country or world with similar names and history. So, when you get that marriage license or divorce records, you can be more confident you are dealing with your relatives. The local funeral home can be a great source for death records, as this provides an excellent way to track down the names of family members too.
The great thing about genealogy research is the widespread benefit for so many people. You’ll not only gain the pleasure of your discoveries, but the things you find out are equally appreciated by your family members. In fact, having a thorough, intact genealogy portfolio can be an inspiration for others who come behind you to follow in your footsteps and keep up the tradition!
